Your health in your hands...
Most people will ocasionally develop dry chapped skin. Sometimes dry skin
develops seasonaly and sometimes it can be a year round condition. There are
many factors that can lead to dry skin conditions, such as age
other diseases, and weather conditions. Dry skin can be annoying and
uncomfortable due to various symptoms such as itching, pain and swelling.
Several aproaches may be tried in dealing with dry skin:
- Lubricating the skin
- Moisturizing (hydrating and thickening) the skin
- Chemically softening the skin layer
- Using topical hydrocortisone if redness and swelling
Lubricating the skin is done with products which lessen
friction and make the skin feel smooth. These products don't
necesarrily increase the moisture level. Usually skin lubricants
contain natural and vegetable oils, similar to what are found in
bath oils.
Moisturizing agents are used to increase the water level
in the skin. These agents include humectants such as glycerin
and propylene glycol, with tend to draw water
into the skin layer, occlusive agents such as vaseline and lanolin
form a barrior that keeps moisture from leaving the skin, and
keratin-softening agents such as urea and lactic acid.
